Julie graduated with a first class honours degree in both Zoology & Physiology from Salford University and obtained her PhD in physiology at King’s College, London and held a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Oxford and a JRF (Linacre College, Oxford). She is a Director and she created Symbiosis IP in 2008 to offer intellectual property advice to the Life Science community.

Julie has worked within the academic innovation environment since 1992, specialising in patent prosecution throughout the world, thus gaining valuable knowledge about international patent prosecution and how to achieve success in different countries. Some of the firm’s academic clients she began working with in 1995, others in the early 2000’s, in a strongly competitive market, this is a testament to the value she can bring to academic patent portfolios.

Over the past 25 years, with her work colleagues, she has carefully built a network of international IP attorneys in key jurisdictions (particularly US, Canada, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand) who offer the same excellent service and competitive charging rates that clients and affiliates of Symbiosis expect. The establishment of this network remains an active process, involving monitoring performance, charging rates and overseas attorney progression and placing work accordingly.

Julie has a wealth of experience in obtaining protection for vaccine technologies; diagnostic technologies based on novel biomarkers; Point of Care assays; plant-derived medicaments; ocular treatments; novel antibiotics; therapeutic conjugates; repurposing known drugs; stem cell technologies; T cell immunotherapies; Telomere and DNA damage testing kits; antibody technologies; anti-thrombotics; in vitro cell models; and medical devices such as training, anaesthetic, microscopic and ablation devices.

She also offers strategic advice to senior management and occasionally participates in their board meetings, both in the UK and Europe. Her significant years of experience also mean she undertakes Due Diligence investigations and Freedom to Operate investigations for both the public and private sector communities, her advice is often used to determine whether significant funds will be invested in new SMEs.

Julie holds the Higher Courts Litigation certificate providing her with the ability to conduct litigation in the UK courts, and is also experienced in Oral Proceedings and Opposition procedures before the European Patent Office.

Julie is based in our Evesham office.
